Vines cultivated in the Bas Razès  include: Cinsaut; Merlot; Cabernet Sauvignon; Cabernet Franc; Grenache
Cot et Noir (the principal assemblage for Cru-Malepère) and Chardonnay. Local Chardonnays are vinified in a variety of ways
and wine-tasting is essential (good excuse!) to appreciate the regional differences in SOIL, CLIMATE & PRODUCTION methods.

There are 3,200 hectares of vineyards (1,300 hectares for Malepère vinification) and fields of cereals, oil seed rape and bright yellow sunflowers.
The southern half of the Razès (CLICK HERE for MAP) is also famous for its Blanquette sparkling wine made from the ancient
Mauzac cépage . The region's Greco-Roman past and Celtic-influenced, Latin-based Occitan language & traditions, produce
a rich cultural heritage further shaped by those Vendange grape harvest workers from Spain & Portugal that settled locally.

.Malepère is named after after a major hill just north of Limoux - its name derived from 'mauvaise pierre' the friable grey calcite that lies just below the clay top-soil.Cultural influences from Spain and Portugal.
