THE RAZÈS – deep in Cathar country near Carcassonne, Limoux and the Corbières

"Razès" describes
that portion of the Audoise foothills to the Pyrénées once known
as "Redhæsium"
– the Roman name for the ancient district of Comté de Rennes le Château.
At the time of Visigoth supremacy in the region,
"Redhæ" was the once-large local capital now shrunk in
size to a small village known as RENNES LE CHÂTEAU.
This historic region is within Le Pays Cathare in Haut Languedoc province. It features several
good
LOCAL WALKS and PRE-HISTORIC
SETTLEMENTS. For its proximity to major towns and the coast SEE MAP.
In the high Razès (pictured below) cattle graze and grass cut for feed.
Some fruit & maize grown near reliable water sources.
The southern Razès is home to an excellent Dinosaur Museum at Espéraza, just beyond Limoux, centre of the world's
first sparkling wine production.
(Pictures
show local views, the castle within the walled mediæval cité of
Carcassonne, Château Puilaurens in the southern Corbières and view
in the high Razès.)
