Orchid-hunting
This limestone region is noted for
83 varieties of wild orchid that grow throughout the Aude.
During May/June guests have previously recorded 27 species flowering in the same week.
The "Lizard-Tail" (pictured left below) was found locally and
the "White Asphodel" lilly (pictured right)
was growing at an altitude of 1,500 metres in the Pyrénées near COL DE PAILHÈRES.
We can now offer field-notes to help you locate rare species in the region.
During early summer look out for ALPINE GENTIAN at
2,000 metres. These and other plant varieties that have finished
flowering around our B&B can be
found in full bloom at higher altitudes much later in the season – including ox-slips and wild daffodils.
(Picture
below shows a Lizard-Tail orchid photographed locally (left) and a field of
White Asphodel lilies growing at 1,500 metres (right).
